Dreams Deferred

Dreams deferred create bitterness in the hearts of those idealistic dreamers. So, many in my community have forgotten the beauty of dreaming because limited possibilities has created a stifling cynicism that permeates the hollow streets our own communities. So the question is how do we begin to dream again when the reality for most seems so dark? This is the question that I pose to my people. Will we dream again? Will we allow for our talents and gifts to be the fuel to restore our community back to its rightful place as beacon of hope and nurturer for our young people? Or will we allow for hopelessness to continually pervade every corner of our communities, allowing innocent dreams to die violent deaths. Our freedom is inextricably linked to our dreams. Let's start dreaming again.

  1. Dreaming is the imaginative thoughts we indulge in while awake, and the series of mental images and emotions we travel through as we sleep. So we must stop teaching our children that dreaming is all we can do, but start freeing their minds. Freeing them from the unemotional unrevealed nap sack we continue to shove upon them to carry, pushing entertainment on them as there only avenues to being successful. To dream you must first think. So encouraging positive thinking, dreaming will fall right into place. Dreaming is not something that is prearranged but anticipated through the heart and supported through the people. Not only must we as people continue to dream we must support and encourage dreams. I do believe we have plenty of dreamers in our community but not enough follow through. So my question is how do we encourage great dreamers and great thinkers to be positive and follow through?

  2. We must give young people the platform and the access to make their dreams concrete. I completely agree that it is time to move beyond dreaming and allowing for our young people to recognize that follow through requires sacrifice. It is imperative that we convince our young people that true freedom requires a sacrifice and that success is connected to how hard you are willing to work. We must create spaces for our young people dreams to become real. Also, if we can truly empower our young people with consciousness then maybe what they dream about will begin to look different.
